CARBONDALE, Ill. (Heartland News) - Southern Illinois University’s annual Great Pumpkin Smash returns on November 7.
The free, family-friendly event is from noon to 3 p.m. at SIU Farms Service Center, 2704 Union Hill Road in Carbondale.
You can bring pumpkins to smash with bats and hammers or toss from ladders and a scissor lift.
The pumpkins must be free of candles, stickers, glitter, yarn and synthetic decorations.
Organizers say the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center will also run an atlatl, so people can use the ancient spear-throwing tool to hurl darts at pumpkins.

What’s left of the pumpkins will be taken to SIU’s forced-air composting facility.
They say you can bring a 5-gallon bucket and fill it with fresh compost to take home.
