Carbondale to host spooky, family events now through Halloween

CARBONDALE, Ill. (Heartland News) - Carbondale Halloween returns with spooky, family fun.

City leaders say there will be classic and new Halloween events every week from now until the beginning of November.

One of the biggest days is Saturday, October 24:

  • Arts n Crap Festival
  • Candy Walk
  • Halloween Calaveras
  • Community Dia de Los Muertos Altar
  • The Great Carbondale Pumpkin Race
  • Terror on the Strip: A Mystery Horror Movie Marathon
  • The Pumpkin Glow

Some other events include:

The Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lakeland Center, 925 S. Giant City Rd. There will be hayrides, kids activities, a food truck and more.

Don’t miss the SIU Homecoming Music Street Festival on Friday, Oct. 16 from 3-11 p.m. The city, SIUC and friends will shut down Illinois Avenue to transform The Strip into a huge block party.

The S’Mores and Spells Outdoor Movie Night will be Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Parrish Park. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to watch Ghostbusters under the stars. There will be free popcorn, s’mores and a campfire.

Residents and business owners may also join the fun and enter for a chance to win the Carbondale Halloween residential and business decorating contest.

According to the city, winners in each category will receive a $50 gift card.

Residential entries must have decorations only visible from the outside of the home or apartment.

For business entries, decor may be outside or inside as long as it is visible in a public viewing space.

All entries must be in city limits.

To participate, email photos to contest@carbondaleil.gov with your name, phone number and address.

They say you must indicate if you consent to your photos being shared on social media and your address being included in the public map of decorated homes.

The submission deadline is Oct. 27.
