CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Heartland News) - October is nearly here, which means spooky season is right around the corner.
And local businesses and landmarks are offering plenty of programming for family fun.
Organizers at the historic Glenn House are running events through the end of October.
Families can enjoy ghost tours in downtown and at the Glenn House, as well as exhibitions at the historic home. These include
- “Dress to Die For” is a tour of the home while it’s in “mourning” period. This will take place every weekend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- “Sip and Spook” is a downtown ghost tour. They will take place on October 2-4 and Oct. 9. Times are listed right here.
- “Bare Bones Ghost Tours” is a ghost tour inside the home. The event will take place October 1, 8 and 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Christy Mershon, the board president of the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau, said spooky season and Halloween was largely inspired by Celtic traditions brought to America in the 1800s.

“We sort of like Americans do, made it even bigger. They carved turnips. We carved pumpkins, right? And so, generally kind of thought to be the day that the vail between this world and the next is a little bit thinner. And people would, depending on whatever sort of tradition you came from either celebrate the dead or be fearful that the dead might come back and so today, we still sort of celebrate some of those spooky season things.”
