BENTON, Ill. (Heartland News) - To celebrate National Public Lands Day, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and partners will host Bike Fest on September 26 at the Rend Lake Project Office/Visitor Center.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a guided bike ride at 10:30 a.m., as well as bike safety checks, a prize raffle, food trucks and more throughout the day.
Guided Bike Ride
Organizers say park rangers will lead a guided, 6-mile bike ride heading north on the bike trail from the visitor center.
Participants will learn about native plants and help remove invasive species along the bike trail.
All necessary equipment will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a water bottle and insect repellent.

Organizers say there will be a self-guided interpretive trail for those who do not wish to join the stewardship activity.
A limited number of electric bikes will be available for use courtesy of Southern Illinois E-bikes and Black Dog Bike Rentals.

Other activities
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will have a booth for a free bike safety check and information about Rend Lake Bike Patrol.
You can sign up to win prizes, visit the Core Friends of Rend Lake to learn about becoming a member and purchase food and drinks from vendors.
