CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Cape Parks and Rec is putting on a variety of events for the month of July, sure to keep children and families engaged and active.
At the city council meeting on July 6, officials proclaimed July Parks and Recreation Month in Cape Girardeau.
Events kick off Wednesday, July 8 with a free celebration of Parks and Rec Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Osage Centre.
Organizers say there will be ice cream, prizes, vendors, crafts and games for children. It’s also a birthday party for mascot Playmo.
On Saturday, July 11, the Capaha Classic 5K and Kid’s One Mile returns to Capaha Park at 8 a.m. Organizers say it’s the city’s longest-running 5K.

Online registration for $20 ends at noon on July 10. People can still register for $25 the day of the event at 6:45 a.m.
Also on July 11, there will be a Luau Party at Cape Splash for ages 10 and younger.
Tickets are $10 per child, and the event is free to season pass holders.

From July 13-17, a free Football Camp for kindergarten through 6th grade will take place at the Shawnee Park Center. Daily sessions are from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and no registration is required.

There will be three Camp PLAYMO sessions throughout the month.
- Country Kids Camp Week: July 13-17
- Pirate Adventure Week: July 20-24
- Camp Carnival Week: July 27-31

On July 24, there will be a movie night at Jefferson Pool at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per child. The movie will be the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon.
