BENTON, Ill. (HEARTLAND NEWS) - Families spread their wings this Fourth of July with a close-up look at one of America’s most recognizable symbols during a special environmental science program at Rend Lake.

The Rend Lake Environmental Science Series presented “All About Eagles” on Saturday, July 4, featuring live eagle ambassadors from the World Bird Sanctuary.

The free educational program was offered at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. at the Rend Lake Visitor Center.

Few animals capture the spirit of the United States quite like the bald eagle, and organizers said this Independence Day program gave visitors a rare opportunity to learn about the majestic birds up close.

Representatives from the World Bird Sanctuary introduced live eagle ambassadors while sharing fascinating facts about their biology, habitats, conservation efforts and the important role they play as one of America’s national symbols.
