Driver in Lyon County crashes after attempting to flee police

LYON COUNTY, Ky. (KFVS) - A driver in Lyon County attempted to flee police during a traffic stop, resulting in a single-vehicle crash on Thursday, June 25.

Around 9:19 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 1 troopers were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at US 62 and Industrial Park Road. They say they observed a pickup truck make an illegal U-turn in a no passing zone on US 62.

A trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but as he approached, the driver turned onto Pleasant Valley Road and rapidly accelerated. The trooper had his emergency lights and sirens on when the driver of the pickup truck initiated a pursuit.

About 2.5 miles later, the driver failed to negotiate a curve and was involved in a single-vehicle crash in the 1100 block of Pleasant Valley Road.

Robert Amburgey, 59, of Eddyville, KY, was taken into custody, received first aid care and was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. He was later released from the hospital.

Amburgey was arrested and charged with Fleeing or Evading Police-1st Degree, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Controlled Substance, No Operator’s License and numerous additional traffic offenses.
