KSP charges former Murray police detective sergeant with additional sexual offenses

MURRAY, Ky. (KFVS) - Kentucky State Police Post 1 charged a former Murray Police Department detective with additional sexual offenses following an indictment by a grand jury.

An investigation into former Murray Det. Sgt. Justin Swoop, 44, began in May after allegations of sexual abuse came to light. A female victim reported that she had multiple sexual encounters with Sgt. Swope while underage.

Swoope was arrested on Wednesday, May 20, on rape and sodomy charges. He resigned from the department after his arrest.

The case was presented to the Calloway County grand jury on June 26. They returned an indictment for a total of 30 charges. The additional charges include:

  • one (1) count of Unlawful Transaction with a Minor, 1st Degree - Illegal Sex Act, Under 16 years of age
  • one (1) count of Unlawful Transaction with a Minor, 1st Degree - Illegal Sex Act, Under 18 years of age
  • eleven (11) counts of Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Minor
  • four (4) counts of Sodomy, 3rd Degree
  • eleven (11) counts of Rape, 3rd Degree
  • two (2) counts of Sexual Abuse, 1st Degree

Swoope remains incarcerated at the Marshall County Detention Center.
