Sheriff identifies 2 victims killed in Jefferson County, Ill. due to reported tornado

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - A reported tornado is to blame for two deaths and five injuries in Jefferson County, Illinois, on Sunday, June 21.

According to Sheriff Jeff Bullard, 83-year-old Delores B. Shelton and 62-year-old Sarita L. Kimble, both of rural Mount Vernon, were killed when severe storms hit the county.

Sheriff Bullard reports one death happened on North Ranch Lane and the second on East July Road.

He said the two victims were killed when the storm hit two single-wide trailer homes.

The sheriff also confirms five other people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

A total of three residences were reportedly destroyed by the storm and many other homes have varying degrees of damage.

The sheriff also said a suspected tornado caused a home in Texico to collapse.

Emergency crews were sent to the northeastern part of Jefferson County shortly after 5 p.m. to multiple reports of damaged homes, down trees and power lines and missing people due to a reported tornado that touched down.

Many viewers reported seeing a tornado around the Dix and Texico communities.

The sheriff said most of the power has been restored and at least three roads were blocked by a large number of downed trees.

He also said volunteer groups are assisting with clean-up efforts in the affected areas.

Sheriff Bullard is urging anyone who does not have emergency business in the northeast section of Jefferson County to avoid the area.

Members of the Mount Vernon Police Department, Illinois State Police, Mount Vernon Fire Department, Jefferson Fire Protection District, Waltonville Fire Department, Woodlawn Fire Department, Webber Fire Department, Irvington Fire, Kell Fire, Litton Ambulance, and United Medical assisted with search and rescue efforts in the area.
