CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - In honor of Bicycle Safety Month, the City of Carbondale Police Department shared safety tips.
They said when riding:
- Obey traffic laws as if you were driving a car
- Stay as far to the right as possible to avoid grates, broken glass and road debris
- Don’t ride more than two people side by side
- Watch for signs prohibiting bicycles. In Illinois, bicycles are not allowed on interstate highways, freeways and tollways
When riding at night, you must have the following:
- White front light visible for at least 500 feet
- Red rear reflector visible from 100-600 feet
- Pedal reflectors visible from the front and rear for 200 feet
- Side reflectors visible from 500 feet
- Brightly-colored clothing with reflective strips
