MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (KFVS) - The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about scam calls that demand victims to pay large amounts of “bond money.”

In a recent report, the sheriff’s office learned that a victim was told by a scammer on the phone to deposit thousands of dollars in a CoinStar machine at a nearby business.

They said they often receive reports about scammers contacting victims claiming to be law enforcement and demanding “bond money” to avoid an arrest warrant.

The sheriff’s office said law enforcement will never contact you by phone and threaten you for bond money or demand that you obtain gift cards or other forms of payment.

They stress that bonds can only be paid for at the McCracken County Courthouse, the clerk’s office or at the McCracken County jail after hours. They cannot be paid via gift cards, bitcoin or donation.
