JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) - The day before lawmakers leave Jefferson City for the year, Missouri’s governor celebrates his wins.
Gov. Mike Kehoe praises what he calls a successful legislative session. Lawmakers passed his tax plan, which will go to voters on the ballot in August or November. If voters approve the plan, the state income tax will be eliminated and lawmakers can raise sales tax or introduce new ones to replace the revenue.
“This is a transformational moment for our state and it’s about more than just taxes,” Kehoe said. “We want families to keep more of what they earn from the start.”
Democratic leadership said they would rather see property tax reform. State Sen. Doug Beck said there is confusion with the future of sales tax, income tax and property tax being uncertain.
“There’s so many balls in the air, so to speak, as juggling,” Beck said. “So, we know the governor has his tax plan that he’s trying to get the people of Missouri to approve, so that’s two legs of the stand, that’s sales tax and income tax. And our third little leg of our stool is property tax. And if we have all three of those in the air and not sure where they’re going to land, that could be a disaster.”

Both Republicans and Democrats hope to see property tax reform pass on the final day of session. Republican leaders said property tax reform is likely to pass Friday after a conference committee comes to a compromise between the House and Senate versions.
State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer said a bill that would give Missourians relief from property tax on their homes is a top priority not yet on the governor’s desk. Luetkemeyer said the bill will remove bureaucratic red tape for Missourians to apply for tax freezes and appeal the property assessments on their homes.
“A bill that’s going to do a lot of different things to give Missourians relief from property tax on their homes, and so that would be for me the biggest priority that’s not yet on the governor’s desk,” Luetkemeyer said.
Kehoe said a special session this year is not likely, but that could always change.
