CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam regarding fake federal arrest warrants.

The sheriff’s office said a citizen received and reported a fake arrest warrant document.

Scammers send fake arrest warrants that look legitimate, pressuring people to send money.

The scams often include:

  • Phone calls claiming you have a federal warrant
  • Instructions to pay fines immediately to avoid arrest
  • Requests for payment through non-traditional methods (gift cards, cryptocurrency, apps, etc.)
  • Use of official-looking documents

Legitimate federal court matters will be handled through an official legal process. Law enforcement will not call you in advance to pay money to avoid an arrest.

If you receive a call like this:

  • Do not provide personal or financial information
  • Do not send money
  • Hang up and verify information through official channels
