CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - About a million Americans are living with multiple sclerosis, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
SEMO MS Community hosted a Walk for a Cure on Saturday, April 25.
The event kicked off at 9 a.m. at Capaha Park Shelter #1 in Cape Girardeau.
Participants took a “symbolic victory lap” around Capaha Pond.

There were games, snacks and a raffle with prizes donated by people and businesses in the community.

Volunteer Group Leader Morgan Schmid shared her personal connection to the community and support group.
“I was diagnosed five years ago, and I was looking around for a support group,” Schmid said. “They said there was one in Cape, but they went dormant during Covid. So, I kind of revived it, and they need somebody to lead it, so I started leading it, and then I was put on these walks. This is the fourth one that I’ve done.”
Organizers said the walk has grown in recent years.
All proceeds from donations and raffle tickets are going toward research for a cure through the National MS Society.

Outside of the annual walk, the group meets regularly on one Saturday morning every other month.
It’s a support group for people impacted by the disease or who know someone with the diagnosis.
