Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site to host programs on food traditions, American folk music in Ill.

LERNA, Ill. (KFVS) - The Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site will host two events in April to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Starting with Saturday, April 18, historian and musician Bucky Halker will share the life and songs of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie.

The program starts at 2 p.m. and includes singalong songs.

According to a news release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, it will blend live guitar and vocal performances with historical commentary about Guthrie’s life and the social issues reflected in his music.

On Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m., chef and educator Lori Parrett will present “The Frosted Republic” about Illinois’ role in shaping American cake and dessert traditions.

According to IDNR, the program will show the connections from early decorating classes by Wilton Brands to Duncan Hines’ influence and the Sara Lee bakery of Downers Grove.

The Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site includes the preserved 1840s home of Thomas Lincoln and Sarah Bush Lincoln. It’s located about 8 miles south of Charleston and 14 miles southeast of Mattoon.
