CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - A local cadet is being recognized with one of the highest honors in the Civil Air Patrol.

Civil Air Patrol is a federally funded, nonprofit corporation that teaches leadership to children and young adults.

15-year-old Trysten Weinhold received the Billy Mitchell award, which marks a major milestone in a cadet’s journey toward leadership. The award is presented to those who demonstrate qualities such as discipline and dedication.

“The maturity I’ve seen is.. it’s tremendous. I’m incredibly proud,” said Weinhold when reflecting on his growth.

“I am incredibly proud. I can’t even express how much pride I have for him right now,” said his mother, Squadron Commander Jacquelyn Weinhold. “He has worked incredibly hard to earn this.”

When asked where he sees himself in five years, Weinhold said he’d like to go into the army with his paramedics certification and serve his country overseas.
