Giant City State Park announces March programs

MAKANDA, Ill. (KFVS) - Giant City State Park in Makanda, Illinois, welcomes the community to join various events in March.

Buds and Bark Winter Tree I.D. - Saturday, March 7

MCD Community Forester, Jennifer Behnken, will share easy and fun tips to discover trees using their buds and bark. This includes a 1-mile hike of the Giant City Nature Trail.

The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required due to limited space.

Accessible Birding Hike - Sunday, March 8

Park Volunteer and Southern Illinois Audubon Society member, Vicki Lang-Mandenhall, will guide attendees along the 1/3 mile accessible Post Oak Trail.

Bionoculars will be available.

The hike will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m.

This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required due to limited space.

What Frog is That? - Sunday, March 8

Biologist John Palis will teach attendees how to identify frogs in southern Ill. No live animals will be present.

The presentation will take place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

This is a free public presentation, and registration is required due to limited space.

Glaciers End Hike - Saturday, March 14

Experiential Education Specialist with the SIUC STEM Education Research Center, Steve Gariepy, will lead an interpretive hike to Glacier’s End.

Attendees should bring their own lunch.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Primer to Understanding Grass and Sedges - Sunday, March 15

Local botanist, Chris Benda, will explain how to identify the differences between some common grasses and sedges of southern Ill.

Egg-cellent Natural Dyes - Saturday, March 21

Leaders will teach attendees different techniques to dye eggs.

The event will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required due to limited space.
