SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) - It’s Woodsy Owl’s birthday, and to celebrate, you can help clean up the Shawnee National Forest!
Woodsy Owl, a symbol for the United States Forest Service, is turning 55 years old.
And Illinois Extension, Shawnee National Forest and Friends of the Shawnee National Forest are joining together to call for volunteers of all ages to join the 2026 Trash Blasts, a series of fun, hands-on cleanup events happening throughout southern Illinois.
Volunteers will roll up their sleeves, step outside and get to work cleaning up the Shawnee National Forest.
Below is a list of all the trash blast opportunities in southern Illinois this year:
- March 6 - Iron Furnace
- April 3 - Grantsburg Swamp
- May 1 - Ripple Hollow
- June 5 - Dutchman Lake
- September 4 - Bean Ridge
- October 2 - Turkey Bayou
- November 6 - Iron Furnace
