POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KFVS) - Are you looking for a local volunteer opportunity? The staff at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff could use your help.
The medical center said it needs people to fill roles and assist veterans in areas where the staff cannot--like in the Community Living Center, where more help is needed as the holidays approach.
“We’re reaching out for volunteers because a lot of veterans during the holidays feel left alone or left behind,” said Dale Garrett, chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement.
Volunteers will play bingo or other activities with the residents, engage in one-on-one visitations and conversations, as well as assist the veterans around the facility and outside.
Ideal volunteer candidates include those who love to talk and engage in conversation, are willing to help where needed and love to serve others.

Group volunteers are being accepted as well.
“We’re also asking for activities other than bingo, such as church or school choirs coming up to sing, various clubs or sports teams making visits, or maybe even ice cream socials or any other activity ideas they may have,” Garrett said.
Short-term volunteers will have a brief orientation, with minimal paperwork required. Those committing to weekly or monthly volunteer service will need to undergo a more extensive orientation and application process.
