Celebrate Christmas with a tree from the Shawnee National Forest

HARRISBURG, Ill. (KFVS) – If you ever wanted to cut and decorate your very own Christmas tree, you can do so by purchasing a permit online from the U.S. Forest Service.

According to the Forest Service, all you need to do is visit recreation.gov and search for Shawnee National Forest Christmas Tree Permits. Visitors will also need to set up or log in to a recreation.gov account to complete the transaction.

Trees cannot be taller than 15 feet, and stumps are limited to 6 inches in diameter. Make sure to choose the right tree, because once you pick one, you must cut it down completely.

This year, in addition to Eastern red cedar trees, loblolly pine, shortleaf pine and white pine trees are included in the permit.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, cutting a Christmas tree improves forest health. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.
