CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale to host Thanks “GivingBack” food drive to help Salukis in need.
They say faculty, staff and community members are invited to donate nonperishable food items for the Saluki Food Pantry on November 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Donations can be dropped off in the first floor cross halls of the Student Center, near the University Bookstore. Those who are unable to drop off donations are encouraged to email foodpantry@siu.edu.
“We served 280 students during the 2024-2025 academic year, and we’ve already served 239 students so far this semester,” said Emily Spann, associate director of the SIU Student Center. “The need is definitely there.”
While all food gifts are appreciated, organizers say the need is particularly great for:

- Canned tuna, chicken, turkey, Vienna sausage and similar proteins
- Peanut butter and canned or dried beans
- Brown or white rice, oatmeal, cereal and pasta/boxed-pasta meals
- Spaghetti, tomato paste, canned tomatoes, Ramen noodles, chicken noodle soup, chili and similar sauces and soups
- Canned fruit or fruit cups, preferably with no added sugar
- Canned vegetables of all kinds
- Packaged/boxed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cornbread
- Staples, including sugar, flour, salt and seasonings
- Jelly, jam, baking mixes, dressings (preferably low-fat)

The food pantry, located on the lower level of the Student Center, is open three hours each weekday with hours varying from day to day to fit students’ schdules.
