MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KFVS) - It’s apple time in Murphysboro!
The 73rd annual Murphysboro Apple Festival kicked off Wednesday, September 11 with the Appletime Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 a.m.
Festivities started at 5 p.m. at the Appletime Stage with the raising of the American Flag and singing of the National Anthem by the Murphysboro Middle and High School Choirs. Winners of the Apple Blossom and Window Display Contests will be announced after the opening ceremony.
This year’s theme is “In Our Apple Era.”
There are multiple events to celebrate the annual event including a traditional hometown carnival, food, games, free entertainment, arts and crafts fair, parades and more.

The Children’s Pet & Hobby Parade is Friday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m.
The Apple Festival Grand Parade touted as one of the longest parades in Illinois kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Bands from across southern Illinois and southeast Missouri are scheduled to participate. Many will also be participating in the Drums at Appletime competition at Murphysboro High School. Organizers say this will be a record-setting year for the event with 19 bands competing.
