Nothing says fall like a warm, spiced drink. You know the ones that make you all warm and fuzzy from the inside out.
Homemade apple cider is good and all, but this Heartland Weekend we wanted to kick it up a notch.
So we reached out to Socials Cafe and Coffeehouse in downtown Cape Girardeau for some help.
The cafe opened its doors is known for its made-to-order desserts, fresh lunch options, and creative drinks.
This fall, owner Allen Findley shared with us a family recipe perfect to sip on when the temperatures outside begin to dip.
He calls it wassel.
Findley says the recipe was his great-grandfathers. He remembers his mother taking it very seriously.
“She loved her wassel when the weather started to cool off,” Findley explained. “She would sit at night and sip til the wee hours of the night. And anyone who knew her knew when it was wassel season started (she wasn’t quiet about it.)”
Recipe for Wassel
- 2 qt. apple cider
- 1 qt. cranberry juice
- 3 oranges
- a handful of cloves
- Stud the oranges with whole cloves (heavy).
- Place oranges in a roasting pan and add water halfway up the sides.
- Bake the oranges in the water at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
- Combine the baked oranges, cinnamon sticks, apple cider and cranberry juice in a large saucepan.
- Warm it all to almost boiling.
- Turn down the heat to low.
- When ready to serve, add light rum to taste to each cup, or add a fifth of rum to the pot.
Stop into Socials for a warm meal or caffeinated drink.
The cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except on Fridays the doors open at 11 a.m.
Findley can also whip up a dessert or two for special occasions.
