Watch as hot doughnuts go through the glazing process.
You can officially go nuts for donuts! Krispy Kreme in Cape Girardeau announced, after a bit of a delay, they are open.
Owners turned on the Hot Now sign on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 a.m.
The first person into the new building, located at 2122 Williams Street, on opening day was awarded with a free dozen donuts each week for a year.
The next 99 people inside received a free dozen donuts each month for a year.
The official opening comes more than four months after construction crews broke ground.
People lined the parking lot Tuesday morning to get a piece of the tasty new food spot.
The original opening date was Monday, Jan. 14 but the restaurant has had a delay due to weather.
Eric Snider with Krispy Kreme says after snow in November, rain in December and more snow in January, construction crews were not able to finish their parking lot.
That’s all in the past now! They hosted a block party of sorts to celebrate.
“It’ll be one of the biggest openings Cape Girardeau has ever seen of a business,” Snider said.
Folks stood in line most of the day Tuesday, Feb. 12 to get their hands on a box of hot donuts.
Ty’s Summer Sno had to find a new location because Krispy Kreme set up shop on their original location.
Starting in 2019, the owner will start a new era at a different location in Cape Girardeau.
Cool off with something cool and sweet at 2201 Broadway.

If you aren’t familiar with the doughnut peddler, we’re here to help introduce you to all the possibilities.
Of course, they’re probably best known for the original glazed doughnut. Tip: when the sign is on, it means donuts are hot and fresh coming off the line. (Sorry to disappoint you, but the sign does not mean you get a free doughnut. While that’s sad because we all love free things, it’s also exciting because hot doughnuts are life.)
They’ve also got chocolate glazed, and sprinkles, and filled.
And they’re also good about thinking up new, limited time flavors that usually coordinate with the season.
Not a huge glazed doughnut fan? That’s okay. They also have apple fritters, cake doughnuts, cinnamon buns, and coffee.
Okay, enough is enough. I’ve waxed and waned poetic about doughnuts for long enough.
But join with Heartland Weekend as we happily welcome a new business to Cape Girardeau!
We’ll stay hot on the doughnut trail and bring you updates as we get them!
