‘Clang, clang, clang went the trolley:’ free trolley rides in Cape Girardeau

Want to take a free ride around downtown Cape Girardeau? Soon you’ll be able to hitch a ride on the Free Trolley through the streets of downtown Cape Girardeau.

The public is invited to the ribbon cutting and inaugural ride on Thursday, July 13 at 3:30 p.m. The first 15 people to hop on the trolley will get a free Downtown Cape t-shirt.

The trolley will be in service every Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., and from 12 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

During that time it will make seven stops to get you to your destination.

Those stops include the public parking lot at the corner of Broadway and Middle Street, the corner of Fountain Street by the Marquette Tower, the public parking lot at the corner of Broadway and Main Street, the Isle Casino, the public parking lot at the corner of Main and Independence, the public parking lot at 35 S. Spanish Street and the corner of Spanish and Themis.

The goal: make access easier to public parking and downtown destinations.

Executive Director for Old Town Cape, Inc. and Downtown Cape Girardeau Community Improvement District liaison Marla Mills said the trolley will be a wonderful addition to the downtown area.

“We believe the Trolley will be a wonderful tool to make it easier to access all the unique businesses and events in Downtown Cape. This type of partnership is what makes great things possible,” Mills said.

A six month trial period will be used to better understand hours and rider interest.

The free trolley is in part of a partnership with Isle Casino, Visit Cape, and the Downtown Community Improvement District.
